2016 Symposium

The 2016 Symposium will be exceptional, as we celebrate our 30th year. All of the 1986 presenters are being invited, as well as all of the Malcolm Knowles Award winners. So far we have positive responses from Jim Bellanca, Naomi Boyer, Ralph Brockett, Bob Bulik, Philippe Carre, Richard Durr, the Guglielminos, Roger Hiemstra, Carol Kasworm, Huey Long, and Mike Ponton – and "possibles" from a number of others.

Special Events

There will be a special salute to Huey Long, who founded the symposium in 1986, and Meet the Authors rotating roundtables so you can have the opportunity of small-group conversations with the First Presenters and MKA winners. Based on suggestions from last years' participants, we will also have Best Practices Roundtables by area – all of this in addition to an exciting opening session, hopefully with the cooperation of NASA. As Huey Long quipped, "The 2016 SDL Symposium will be Out of This World!"

Time Capsule

This year you are being invited to bring a meaningful item to place in a time capsule that we plan to open at the 40th Symposium. In a general session or at the dinner, we will accept the items and give you a chance to say a few words about your contribution. Don't miss all the learning, all the great colleagues, and all the fun!!!

Testimonials

"The Symposium was a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the major researchers in self-directed learning. I think it should be on a ‘must attend’ list for any student, practitioner, or faculty member interested in this line of research".

"The value of the SDL Symposium for me is that we talk across boundaries and form a true learning community".

Hotel Reservations for the 2016 Symposium

We have held rooms for attendees at the conference hotel, Courtyard by Marriott, Cocoa Beach and at the Hampton Inn, immediately adjacent to the Marriott. The rooms will be held at a special rate of $129.00 per night until January 18 or until the reserved rooms are all booked. It’s a great time to be in Cocoa, and often the hotel is fully booked and rates soar, so be sure to book early.
